ACTIVITY'S REFLECTION

For my brief I wanted to choose an essay topic that includes the following:

 *  Plenty of available research materials of interest to me
*Will be able to be worked into an essay title that is formed as a question
For choosing the topic of my essay, I focused on the questions given on the “Theories, Contexts and Approaches” section:

• How does your topic link to your own practice, in either practical or theoretical ways?
• How investigation into the selected topic will impact on your creative practice?
• Why is it important for you to conduct research into that specific area?
• Will your selected topic support the practical work that you aim to undertake in the final stage of your study? Does it give theoretical strength to your own practical work?

 The three potential topics were:

- Color Theory:
Color is one of the most important elements of design and it can add lots of meaning to a work. I could explore how our color choices make a difference to the messages we ty to convey through our designs, the psychological reactions to certain color palettes and if the meanings associated with colors are affecting design. Other things I could explore are what is the signified and signifier of the colors and how are colors studied and develop in the graphic design profession? What is the purpose that designer uses to associate certain colors with certain ideas or values?
This topic will link to my practice as we are always manipulating color In order to enhance meaning. Making a deep research into this topic will give me a strong knowledge on how color works in graphic design and how can I take the most out of it. Knowledge on this topic will have a direct impact on my creative practice because I will have to work with color in almost every design. This topic will also give theoretical strength to my own practical work.

- Graphic Design and social responsibility:
This topic can be related to my previous essay topic, design sustainability. In this case I could search deeper into the social responsibilities of graphic designers, which ones they are and why they have it. Other things to explore here would be what social design is, how does responsibility affects how a designer works? I could also mention some examples were designers were social responsible and how this affected society, or discuss the effects of subliminal advertising and maybe the influences of green design.
This topic will link to my practice because I want to be a Graphic Designer with ethics and social responsibility. I want to contribute positively to the world and the community, so learning how I can do this through graphic design is very useful for me. Social responsibility is something all Graphic designers should have and be committed too.

- Graphic Design trends of the 21st Century:
Here I will be exploring the trends in Graphic Design of this century, as well as their relevance to the field. I will also discuss if it is really important to follow those trends or not, which ones are the most long-lasting, and which ones have historical influences.

Finally, I decided to reflect on some questions before moving on to my next activities:

  •  What are my interests as a creative practitioner?
My main goal as a graphic designer is to communicate. I am also interested in sustainable design, due the fact that I live in this world and I don’t want to contribute to its pollution.

  •  How are those interest reflected in my ideas for theoretical investigation?
As my main goal is to communicate, I need to learn graphic design theory and how can I apply it to my own designs in order to enhance meaning and send a message clearly. By learning color theory for example, I will be able to combine colors that will have a determined psychological reaction on the audience.

  •  What are my goals in writing an essay for this module?
My goals will be to find out how can I use color to convey meaning, to make an extended research and learn a lot on this topic and to write a well explained and argumentative essay.
